QUAILS TIPS

Quail in Kenya highly valued for their pricey meat and eggs and their proven medicinal value.  Quails are considered a wild animal and thus farmers must apply for a permit from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)  before they start keeping them.
Quail meat
Quail meat is a delicacy. It is a lean white tender meat and low in skin fat and low cholesterol value. Quail eggs weigh about 10 grams in comparison to 55 grams for a chicken egg. However they are very nutritious. They contain a higher quantity of vitamin B complex, vitamin K, and Vitamin E than chicken eggs. Quail kept in captivity for egg production must be exposed to sufficient sunlight, which helps in yellowing of the yolk. Ancient traditions believed that the eggs had medicinal value.
Quail eggs
Quail eggs are very delicious and comparable to free range chicken, they are low in cholesterol and rich in choline, a chemical essential for brain function. They have many health benefits and are recommended for various conditions including: Anemia, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, gastritis, diabetes, nourish the prostrate gland that may help restore sexual potency.
If children eat at least two eggs daily they grow better and are less likely to suffer from infectious diseases.

Quail Farming in Kenya

Requirements for Quail Farming in Kenya
Because quail is considered a wild animal, quail farmers first need to apply for a permit from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
Before the service can issue a licence, KWS officials must inspect the farm to ensure that it meets requirements for raising quail.
An annual fee for maintaining a licence costs up to 2,000 shillings ($22.9), and can be renewed annually subject to meeting certain conditions, including hygiene.
The KWS conducts periodic monitoring and inspections of farms, and will withdraw licenses from farmers who violate the conditions
Once you have your permit you can obtain a list of Quail farmers or breeders from KWS.
Starting  Quail farming in Kenya

Quail birds, unlike chickens, are very easy to maintain. A room of 12 by 12 sizes can accommodate between 700 and 800 quail birds and that is not possible with chickens. Quail birds’ feed is also not a problem. One thousand quail birds can only consume one 25 kilogramme bag in a day. Also, the birds don’t have disease problem like chickens, and this is why it is not good to merge quail birds with chickens.
Housing Quail bird

Quail are usually reared in captivity because they do not do well naturally.  The reason for this is, quail usually move around a lot due to the fear of predators. But in captivity you can harvest the eggs and incubate them. Quail are very hardy and all do is just provide them with adequate food and water. Quail command a fairly good appetite so be sure to keep them well feed. In captive breeding the first two weeks are very instrumental. If you do not feed them well, they become stunted in growth which is not good for the meat market.
In farming quail birds, room may not even be necessary. One can make a cage. A cage of two feet width and four feet length can contain between 50 and 100 quail birds. One can even make the cage in step-like style, where one cage can have steps that can contain sets of quail birds.
Feeding Quails
The feed of quail birds is basically divided into two; starter mash and layer mash. A farmer of quail birds uses the starter mash after the hatching of quail chicks up to the time they start laying eggs. Then the farmer can change to layer mash feed. A farmer turns to layer mash feed when he begins to get five per cent of egg output. Feed of quail birds is not the same with that of chickens.
Quail birds start laying eggs when they become 40 days old. This is to say quail birds start laying eggs when they are five to six weeks. Quail birds can take up to one and half years laying eggs without break. They can only fail when they are not getting good food or if their room is left dirty. This is why it is good to be constantly cleaning quail birds’ room; keeping it in good condition. It is important to have good ventilation where quail birds are kept. It is also important to be giving them clean water. With all these, a farmer would have good result from his quail birds.
Do Quail lay eggs on daily basis?
We count the eggs on percentage. If a farmer has 100 quail birds for example, he can get 90 eggs on daily basis. This is to say 90 per cent egg output. Sometimes, it can reach up to 95 per cent. Therefore, the birds have high egg laying ability, far above chickens. The birds usually lay their eggs after 4pm and up to 8pm. In addition, the birds need light. A farmer can give them light up to 10pm for efficiency and high eggs output.
Problems of Quail farming  in Kenya
Well, Quails do not have many problems. Once a quail birds’ farmer maintains a clean and tidy environment for them, with good feed and water, he would not have much problem. Quail birds drink much water. Therefore, a farmer has to make water available always. The birds also need close attention. A farmer should make sure that he does not leave any hole that a snake or cat would have contact with his birds. If those things are adhered to, a farmer would have fewer problems with his quail birds.
Benefits of quail products

Medicinal benefits of quail products

Cooked or raw, quail eggs bring many benefits for the body – have a nutritional value four times higher than regular eggs and doctors recommend quail eggs in treating various diseases or for general health maintenance.
Quail eggs have no contraindications, so anytime, a cure with quail eggs is beneficial. Unlike chicken egg, the quail egg contains five times more phosphorus, 7.5 times more iron, 15 times more vitamin B2 and six times more vitamin B1. Furthermore, quail eggs also contain calcium, zinc, sulfur and potassium.
Cancer Prevention and Recovery
Modern food production and preservation methods raise the amount of substances and elements that are toxic to the human body (free radicals). Most of these elements promote the growth of naturally occurring cancerous cells in the body, uncontrolled growth of these cells result in cancer.
Quail eggs are rich in vitamin A and Selenium therefore helps in detoxification of the body by removing the free radicals ingested from other food sources. Due to this, quail eggs are also very alkaline hence are not only useful in prevention of cancer but also useful to patients undergoing cancer treatment since they provide an environment unsuitable for cancer growth.
Quail eggs offer a natural and readily available alternative for cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy, they are also a healthy vitamin rich solution for those who have undergone surgery to remove the cancer. Moreover, they will help strengthen your immune system while repairing damaged tissues following cancer treatments.
Anaemia
Anaemia is caused by a deficiency of iron in the body, its symptoms can be minor or major depending  on how much iron is lacking in the body. The human body requires a lot of iron therefore it is advisable to consume foods rich in this.
Quail eggs are a good source of iron, vitamin A and B12 hence are a natural way to prevent anaemia and help people recovering from it. Including enough quail eggs in the day to day diet will prevent anaemia and can be an alternative to iron shots or pills for those suffering from anaemia.
Ease Digestive Tract Disorders
Quail eggs are rich in antioxidants, magnesium, vitamin B6, potassium and have high alkaline content therefore can be used as a remedy to gastritis and ulcers among other things.
Quail eggs are very useful for people with gastritis, stomach and duodenal ulcers since they are readily available and reduce stomach acid levels with their high alkaline content and antioxidant properties. A few eggs included in the daily diet can replace expensive pills and provide lasting relief from ulcers and acidic discomforts.
Their richness in Selenium and vitamin A qualify quail eggs as natural antioxidants; which are now endorsed through clinical studies for treatment of peptic ulcers and gastritis since they are both caused by oxidative stress and free radical overload in the digestive tract.
Ease Eczema Symptoms
Eczema  is term for a group of medical conditions that cause the skin to become inflamed or irritated. The most common type of eczema is known as atopic dermatitis, or atopic eczema. Atopic refers to a group of diseases with an often inherited tendency to develop other allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever.
Eczema affects about 10% to 20% of infants and about 3% of adults and children in the U.S. Most infants who develop the condition outgrow it by their tenth birthday, while some people continue to experience symptoms on and off throughout life. With proper treatment, the disease can be controlled in the majority of sufferers.
Research has identified enriched sources of Vitamin A as perhaps the most vital nutrient deficiency to replenish. In particular, products rich in Vitamin A retinol have been found to heal damaged epithelial tissue associated with eczema. Quail eggs are not only rich in Vitamin A, they are among the only sources of retinol that does not compromise your cholesterol levels.
Heal Skin Damage from Allergies
Quail eggs are rich in the essential fatty acids required to maintain skin cell moisture that hydrates the skin and helps in healing skin damage from excessive dryness, peeling and cracking. They are also rich in vitamin B2 that helps in repairing damaged tissue without the excessive cholesterol levels in other sources of vitamin B2
The high alkaline content of quail eggs makes them ideal for detoxification of the body from residual acids therefore minimizing inflammation and itchiness resulting from skin rash, eczema and psoriasis. Reduction of the itchiness assists in the healing process of damaged skin.
Research also shows that consuming food rich in vitamin B12 (like quail eggs) inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines that are the primary cause of skin allergies. Consumption of quail eggs in such cases would be an advisable alternative to anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. corticosteroid hormones, immune-suppressants and anti-itch antihistamines) could lead to skin thinning, diminished immune system and liver damage.
Kidney and Gall Stones Removal
High amounts of Vitamin C or other source of oxalates combine with calcium and reduce its ability to be absorbed. This is turn, creates calcium stone deposits. This causes pains around the kidney area; one of the signs of kidney stones.
Quail eggs provide essential nutrients and less oxalates to eliminate kidney and gall stones. They are rich in magnesium, vitamin B6 and potassium therefore making them a perfect remedy for kidney and gall stones elimination.
The Potassium reduces the excessive urinary calcium excretion that often leads to kidney stones.
The high amounts of Vitamin B6 and magnesium, coupled with low amounts of Vitamin C, inhibit oxalate stone formation. Quail eggs are low oxalate and the calcium in them is easily absorbed.
Rashes
Another common affliction addressed by quail eggs are allergic skin conditions. Research shows that most who have survived these harsh symptoms of skin itch, dryness, discolorations and even cracking engage in a multitude of treatments. Some good news is that nutrients found in the quail egg contribute greatly to the maintenance and prevention of skin allergies. Specifically, they aid in controlling allergic skin symptoms; healing skin damage from eczema and psoriasis; and minimizing the possibility of future allergic skin flair-ups.
Reduce Asthma Flair-Ups
Asthma prevalence has risen alarmingly over the recent years and so have methods of combatting it. Research now shows that a person suffering from asthma requires foods rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids as a natural remedy (anti-inflamatory) as opposed to modern medicine which has varied side effects for different people.
Quail egss are rich in vitamin A and Selenium making them an excellent antioxidant that can improve lung functions, their high Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids also help in reducing inflamation. This means quail eggs can be used as a natural way to ward off asthma attacks / flair-ups without the need to use inhailers and steroids.
Heart Disease
Heart disease is spreading widely and slowly becoming a leading cause of many human deaths across the world, eating healthy and exercising helps improve the heart and prevent related diseases.
Quail eggs are an excellent choice of food for people who wish to improve the condition of their heart. They are low in carbohydrates and bad cholesterol (Low-density lipoprotein; LDL), they also improve the blood lipids profile. They also help in reducing chances of heart disease since they are  rich in folic acid, vitamin B12, iron, phosphorous, protein, riboflavin and selenium.
Rhinitis and Hay Fever Relief
Allergic RhinitisA significant number of people suffer from Rhinitis and Hay Fever, and constantly have to deal with symptoms like sneezing, congestion and generalized fatigue among others.
Quail eggs offer a 100% natural remedy that inhibit the production of harmful elements lie histamines, IgE and free radicals hence reducing the mucus obstruction to airflow in the respiratory system.
They are rich in vitamin A, retonol and antioxidants that naturally suppress histamine and heal the mucus membrane while neutralizing free radicals.
Using quail eggs as an alternative remedy to Rhinitis and hay fever eliminates the need to use anti allergens and steroids (and their side effects). With regular intake of quail eggs, one can enjoy the outdoors without the fear of sinus attack and enjoy relief from allergy symoms without drowsiness that drugs normally introduce.
Non medicinal benefits of quail products
Increased Libido
Quite unfortunately, as men age they naturally loose their sexual urge and desire, this is linked primarily to the prostate gland. Many result in using commercially available stimulants whose effect is not only short lived, but have adverse effects in the long run.
Quail eggs offer a natural way to get back the sexual desire (and prolong it for those who haven’t lost it yet). They improve blood circulation and strengthen the heart muscles therefore increasing stamina, they also contain high levels of proteins, phosphorus, vitamin B, D and E that stimulate and nourish the prostrate gland to increase a man’ sexual health.
Quail eggs can be taken any time of the day without having to worry about some window of opportunity, including a couple of them in the daily diet will not only increase sexual potency but fill you up with a lot of protein, low fat and low carbs unlike other aphrodisiacs.
Body Fitness
Quail eggs can provide the proteins your body needs to nourish muscles for day to day activities or even for a workout to keep fit. They are low in carbohydrates, fats and sugars hence are an ideal low carb diet that will help a person willing to cut down of the carbs and possibly loose weight in the process.
Long Healthy Life
Quail eggs are able to counter aging effects by strengthening the immune system, this in turn keeps your body internal organs healthier thereby increasing your lifespan. They are also rich in antioxidants that help in removing toxins from the body, the antioxidants protect the brain and nervous system from oxidation that occurs with age, which would normally result in memory loss as you age.
Brain Development
Every parents wants their kids to be smart, some use expensive supplements rich in vitamin B2, D, omega-3 and fatty acids. 70% of a featus brain is composed of omega-3 fats that greatly affect a child’s sleep patterns, behavior and IQ (Intelligence Quotient)
Quail eggs provide choline needed for fetal brain function, development and protection of neural cells in the brain and proteins that help nerve development and blood vessel growth. Choline also helps in producing acetyl-choline (a neurotransmitter) needed to improve brain development in children. Quail eggs are also rich in omega-3 and omega-6 and its fat content improves absorption of vitamins and minerals.
Boost Immune System
The human body’s natural immune system has been eroded by constant contact with harmful substances in the environment and others present in the food we ingest. This has made human beings susceptible to infections and diseases that our bodies that our bodies would otherwise naturally fight. There’s is hope for restoration and strengthening the body’s natural immune system, and it comes in the form of an egg; a quail egg.
Quail eggs help in the formation of ovomucoid; a protein that helps in reduction of free-floating IgE and helps fight most allergies. This protein is so effective that it is used in some anti-allergy drugs, quail eggs just provide it naturally without the side effects that come with drugs.
Quail eggs are also rich in selenium and riboflavin that help the body to produce antibodies, they are also themselves resistant to diseases due to high lysozome content that kills bacteria found in other eggs therefore eating them raw does not pose risks that other eggs do.
Healthier Stronger Hair
Human hair is vulnerable to damage from pollution even from when one is young, chemicals in swimming pools and hair products particularly damage hair and cause breakage. Resulting to chemicals to treat this is temporary solution that has to be repeated ever so often, and can irritate the scalp in the process.
Quail eggs on the other hand are a natural solution to the health and strength of hair, they contain vitamins A, B and E therefore constant ingestion will give one strong, healthy and shiny hair. Consuming quail eggs nourish the hair with the nutrients it needs to improve the condition of human hair, they work from inside-out therefore their effects are more permanent, natural and long lasting.
Regular consumption of these eggs will eventually save a lady a large sum of money that she would have otherwise spent at the salon.
Appetizer
Chefs are normally tasked with preparing meals and appetizers that stand out and really stimulate our taste buds, both visually and with taste. Appetizers are also normally meant to be easy for the us to consume and leave us yearning for more. Quail eggs are ideal appetizers, are relatively easier to prepare and have a considerably longer shelf life than other gourmet hors d’oeuvre ingredients.
Healthy, Young Looking and Glowing Skin
There are many people out there, children and adults alike,  who would like to improve the appearance of their skin, most of them spend alot on creams and dermatology to overcome some conditions that they could be ailing from, e.g. acne, rashes and eczema. We all wish to have the effects of aging hidden away from our skin without having to use all the chemicals at our disposal for that.
Quail eggs provide a natural alternative for improving one’s skin and have a long lasting effect. They contain antioxidants that remove toxins and heavy metals from skin cells, and have riboflavin and vitamin B2 that helps in nourishing the skin and improving its appearance, tone and complexion while reducing wrinkles.
They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that assist skin cells in retaining moisture resulting in younger looking skin. Vitamin B in the eggs also helps the skin to retain moisture and improves skin smoothness by aiding in releasing energy from food for skin metabolism. The antioxidants (selenium and vitamin E) protect the skin cells from damage by free radicals. Regular consumption of quail eggs improves the skin pigment with its high iron content.
Quail eggs are so effective in improving the skin conditions that they are used in making of egg yolk facial care masks. You can also apply quail eggs directly on the skin to improve skin appearance.

Safety Tips for Your Quails

Though quails are hardy in that they survive in the jungle, they do require some basic safety measures. The younger the quails, the more they demand attention. As they mature, they become less demanding but still do require a few safety measures. Some of the safety tips you need to know concerning your quails are:
1. Beware of water. Water, though a requirement, can turn to be disastrous to your quails, especially the young ones. Provide the quails with watering points which they cannot fall into.

2. Keep the Floors Clean! Quails like tasting everything. Make sure the floor is clean otherwise they may end up picking some poisonous substances.

3. Be careful when opening and closing doors. Make certain your quail isn't anywhere it can get caught in a closing door or hit by an opening door. When closing doors, watch both the swinging side and the hinged side, because a quail can get its head in between a very small space.

4. Be aware of what's under your feet at all times. It could be a quail! Tame quails like to be where their humans are, and this means hanging around by our feet.

Quail Farming in Kenya

Quail farming in Kenya has taken a drastic turn in the recent past. Hundreds of prospective farmers, mainly from Central Kenya are queuing  outside KWS offices in search of permit to domestic these wild birds.
Seventy two-year-old Philip Gichohi is busy making money ‘restoring’ men’s vitality via sale of quail eggs — a rare venture licensed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to help farmers earn handsomely from the wild birds. His venture into quail farming was motivated by a visit to a quail farm in Kiambu County where he saw a farmer rearing the wild birds as a commercial enterprise and was surprised at the low input and maintenance cost required.
Many others like Gichohi are already in this lucrative venture and are raking in good fortune.  As a result of high demand for these birds, the price for eggs keep on skyrocketing with each passing day. Initially, these eggs could only fetch a paltry Ksh 15 but now, the current price is above Ksh 70. Together with the rising price of eggs goes the demand for incubators. Merchants who deal in sale of incubators have seen their sales increase by several folds in the second half of 2013.
Quails' eggs are said to be very nutritious.

British researchers say that eggs should be pronounced a super-food, as it has a very good impact on our health and even helps to fight obesity. According to nutritionists the egg as food is one of the richest in good in essential ingredients and we all should consume at least one a day. The Nutrition and Food Science magazine has published an article in which researchers emphasize the egg’s important role in general health protection as well as loosing and maintaining body weight.
Dr Carrie Ruxton, the leader of the study analyzed data from not less than 71 previous studies with her colleagues. The research aimed at the nutrient content of hen's eggs and their role in human diet. It turned out that while eggs are poor in calories, they’re rich in protein and full of essential nutrients important to health, such as vitamin D and B12, selenium and choline.

Eggs are rich in antioxidants
The investigations also confirmed that between other protein-containing foods the eggs contain the richest variety and mixture of amino acids that are indispensable for the healthy growth and development of children, adolescents and young adults.
In addition, the high levels of antioxidants in the egg help preventing the age-related macular degeneration (macular degeneration), which is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries.

The eggs are rich in vitamin D
The research shows that children, teenagers and the elderly, as well as consumers of a lot of meat and people who don’t drink milk would gain the most benefit from eating eggs. The study’s one of the key discovery was that eggs are a very important source of vitamin D, and their consumption can significantly increase your daily intake of this very important vitamin. An egg contains more than 20 percent of the recommended daily intake so if you eat two a day you're half covered.
The low vitamin D levels are linked to many diseases: including osteoporosis, cancer of the heart disease, the sclerosis multiplex, and certain immunal illnesses and even mental disorders.
(The above research information is related to hen's eggs and not quail eggs.)

If it’s an Egg, it’s got to be a Quail Egg
Quail eggs are proved to be a very valuable source of vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12 and vitamin D, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, phosphorus and other essential micro-nutrients, minerals and amino acids, which is why they are recommended for regular consumption.
To eat quail eggs as part of a healthy diet it is recommended to cons ume them raw. A lot of the people don’t like the idea but to make the taste more pleasant you can mix it in orange or tomato juice. In order to strengthen the immune system and improve the blood quality a course of 60 eggs is recommended. Initially 3, then 5 eggs a day should be consumed. Obviously no one is suggesting that quail eggs are any kind of a wonder-medicine and will cure serious illnesses like cancer or similar, but their positive effect on human body has been proven.
Quail eggs are considered to be one of the best known natural treatment products. Chinese medical practitioners have been using quail eggs as a treatment for hundreds of years with brilliant results. As quail eggs are slowly becoming an easy to get product on the market more and more people are beginning to show interest in their use as an active natural medicine instead of the chemical products with so many side effects.
Experts in natural treatment methods claim that quail eggs have positive effects on people with stress problems, hypertension, digestive disturbance, gastric ulcer, liver problems, blood pressure and lipid control, migraine, asthma, anemia, various types of allergies, eczema, heart problems, bronchitises illnesses, depression, panic and anxiety illnesses. Quail eggs are also known to stimulate growth, increase sexual appetite, stimulate brain functions which improves intelligence quotient and generally rejuvenates the body.
